asylum for the unwellUnraveling trauma and mental illness through a dialogue between historical and contemporary perspectives.

Drawing from Michel Foucault, those in positions of ‘expert’—i.e., doctors, playwrights, and religious leaders—are the sole authorities in the field. The ones who exert power also render the representations on behalf of those with mental illnesses. Foucault stated that “knowledge is not for knowing: knowledge is for cutting.”
Perhaps that is where my art emerges. I see the dichotomy of this struggle to counteract the dominant narratives in both historic and modern discourses. Through my artistic investigation, I examine the lived experiences of well-being from an insider perspective.

Folger Institute: Artist Research FellowshipZlatar. (2022). [series: Insanity Plea] [acrylic, 4 x 6 inches, 5 pieces].The Folger Institute Artist Research Fellowship provided significant primary academic research alongside ample support for my artist production which examined the cross-cultural and historic narratives of mental illness. Upon analysis, there were immense similarities in terms of who is creating the dominant narratives. Rather than authoritative figures leading and dictating what it is like to experience an illness, those with that lived-in experience are the ones who have a depth of insight to contribute to the discourse. My art aims to juxtapose this power construct, through embodied understanding for vulnerable individuals.‘where can we go when our unwell bodies are not our own?’ - a. zlatar

refuge for the oppressed body
series of 20 works. acrylic. 6x4” 2021-2022.Whether ungendering is a form of protection against the perils of the external world or a way for internal refuge. Those with eating disorders seek the comfort of controlling their bodies. It may be a flawed attempt to exert some sort of agency in this world, but it should be noted. When the body has become violated perhaps the only way to cope is to build walls and protect one's self. It is not something that is inherently positive, but it helps people survive; it provides refuge. These works explore this concept of asylum through the body.

climate artivism

I know I am not alone, countless people are experiencing climate anxiety due to growing concerns about environmental degradation, extreme weather events, and the uncertain future of the planet.
This anxiety stems from the fear of worsening climate impacts, potential loss of habitats, and the perceived inadequacy of current responses to address the climate crisis effectively.
My art dives into this uncertainty but also the ability for us to redefine our actions in hopes of a better future.

Drawing on aerial views of different topographic regions I have been able to visit, including the Algarve, Dubai and Thessaloniki, I explore each city’s topographic landscape to layer narratives about the agricultural impacts of fishermen, and aquatic sustainability. Learning and creating these works based on the community dialogues I had provides ethnographic insights into how climate change affects the different regions and the people that live within these climate affected landscapes. The maxim“as above, so below” reflects how what lies beneath the surface, such as the forgotten ruins of a city or even the submerged stories, can edify the ecological shifts.

Interwoven throughout are ethnographic narratives of sailors, fish, and historic infrastructure conveyed through the imagery of their sailboats, and regional icons as they each reveal the human impacts and the direct ways in which climate change affects maritime workers and communities.

By overlaying these human stories with cartographic gestures and historic architectural fragments, the paintings act as a form of behavioural countermapping; challenging traditional ways of viewing place and heritage to emphasise the people and the coastal city under threat. This work asks us to reflect onwhen the waters rise, it is not only land that is lost, but the stories below the surface of place and people. ‘As above, so below’ is urging us to rethink the future of our planet and communities.

These collages explore the uneasy tension between human leisure, environmental degradation, and cultural preservation. To me, the works symbolise the unseen ecological crises polluting our waterways. Interwoven throughout the composition are fragments of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are all at risk due to our overconsumption. The paradox of luxurious swimmers and human affairs and environmental degradation highlights how pivotal our role is in conservation and heritage management are intrinsically connected to environmental justice.Zlatar. creative outcomesMy creative outcomes portfolio features diverse series of paintings that explore the multifaceted experiences of Eating Disorders. Through a range of works that depict the challenges and struggles faced by those affected by these conditions I aim to shed light on the often overlooked and misunderstood aspects of Eating Disorders.

The portfolio also includes highlights from exhibitions at various galleries and the artist publication. Cumulatively, the creative outcomes facilitate a platform for the experiences depicted to be recognised and understood.

I believe that by bringing attention to the realities of Eating Disorders, we can work towards reducing the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding these conditions. Through my paintings and the various exhibitions and publication in which they have been featured. I hope to create a sense of understanding and connection for those who may be struggling with Eating Disorders and to provide a platform for exploration and reflection on these important and often difficult topics.

In this series of paintings, I explore the untold and hidden experiences of Eating Disorder behaviours. The aim is to shed light on the often invisible struggles faced by those affected. They strive to depict the complex and nuanced experiences of Eating Disorders. My objective is to give voice to the challenges and struggles faced by those affected by these conditions. Eating Disorders can often be accompanied by feelings of shame and secrecy, and I believe that by bringing attention to these hidden experiences, we can gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those affected and the ways in which these behaviours can impact the body and the mind.

Within my doctoral study, the Folger Institute Artist Research Fellowship provided significant primary research data alongside ample support for my artist production, my work ‘Asylum for the Unwell’ (2022), which examined the cross-cultural and historic narratives of mental illness. Upon analysis, there were immense similarities in terms of ‘who’ is creating the dominant narratives. Drawing from Michel Foucault those being in a position of an ‘experts’ i.e. doctors, playwriters, and religious leaders, become the sole authorities in the field. The ones who exert power also render representations on behalf of those with mental illnesses (Foucault, 1984). Foucault stated that “knowledge is not for knowing: knowledge is for cutting” (1984, p.61). Perhaps this is where the intention for my artwork emerges, as my imagery and content aims to cut through many of the current dominant narratives and misrepresentations of Eating Disorders

in both the historic and contemporary discourses. Through my artistic investigation, I examine the lived-in experiences of well-being from an insider perspective that counteracts the authoritative figures within society leading and representing what it is like to experience an illness. Those with that lived-in experience are the ones who have a depth of insight to contribute to the discourse. My art aims to juxtapose this power construct, through embodied understanding of vulnerable individuals.

Those with Eating Disorders seek the comfort of controlling and even oppressing their own bodies. This may be perceived as a ‘flawed’ attempt to exert some sort of agency in this world, but this self-oppression should be noted as a common pattern among Eating Disorder individuals who have experienced a sexual violation and trauma (Palumbo, 2022). That is, Palumbo (2022) notes when the body has become violated in some way, individuals with Eating Disorders use the eating disorder behaviours i.e. binging, purging, restriction to cope and protect oneself. It is not something that is inherently positive, but it helps people survive; it provides refuge. These works explore this concept of asylum through the body. Some reoccurring themes within this series, is the use of my childhood teddy bear ‘Pink’, she has always been a dichotomous strategy for coping: on one hand, it is a source of comfort and to me is the embodiment of my younger self and on the other hand it is a way of suppressing the adult self.

In-patient treatment can be a necessary step on the road to recovery for many individuals with Eating Disorders, but it can also be a deeply isolating and overwhelming experience (Westmoreland & Mehler, 2016). Through this paintings series, I aim to give voice to the complex and often difficult emotions that can arise during this process and to shed light on the ways in which in-patient treatment can impact the mind and body.

In the series ‘Abstracting an Illness’ (2022), I abstract the experience of Eating Disorders through non-representational modalities in order to diverge from the stereotypical representations of the Disease. Through a series of works that use abstract forms and shapes to depict the complexity of Eating Disorders, I aim to shed light on the often difficult and nuanced experiences of those affected.

Eating Disorders are often depicted in a narrow and stereotypical way, and I believe that by using abstract forms, I can create a more nuanced and multifaceted representation of these conditions. Through my paintings, I aim to provide a platform for exploration and reflection and to shed light on the often-overlooked realities of Eating Disorders.

Throughout this body of work ‘Chaos and Control’ (2022), I explore the contradiction of binge eating and then starving oneself as someone with an Eating Disorder. I depict the complex and often tumultuous relationship with food that often reflects psychological patterns between chaos and control. My series of works that delve into experiences of binge eating, I aim to shed light on the ways in which these opposing forces can coexist within the same individual.a serbian renaissanceseries of 11 works. acrylic. 6x4” 2022.

My artwork is deeply influenced by my heritage and my personal experiences with mental health. Growing up, I was surrounded by the rich cultural traditions of my family and community, which instilled in me a deep sense of pride and connection to my roots. However, as I grew older, I also began to grapple with the ways in which my heritage intersected with my mental health. In my cultural heritage, emotions are normally supposed to be repressed. My family never spoke of mental health and women were known for being more emotional and our tears have often been invalidated. My works are exploring key historical Serbian paintings of women reimagined and rendered to embrace me, my illness, and my tears to shed light on the ways in which cultural expectations and traditions can sometimes conflict with an individual's personal well-being. I believe that it is important to acknowledge and honour the ways in which our cultural backgrounds shape our experiences, while also recognizing that it is okay to seek support and care for our mental health.

In this series, I explore the ways in which individuals with Eating Disorders may try to de-gender their bodies due to past trauma such as sexual abuse and the challenges that can arise in the process. Through this series, I aim to highlight the complex and often difficult relationship between the psychological self and the body. I aim to depict the ways in which individuals may try to de-sexualise or de-gender themselves in order to feel more at peace with their bodies as well as it being a mechanism for safeguarding themselves from further unwanted attention.

Eating Disorders can often be accompanied by feelings of discomfort and disconnection with the body, and I believe that by bringing attention to these experiences, we can gain a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those affected. In the works, I am de-gendering through cutting off my female breasts in an attempt to seperate from the sexualized female form. By de-gendering the body in my work, I aim to explore the ways in which societal expectations and norms can contribute to feelings of discomfort and disconnection.

Throughout my painting series ‘The Body Remembers’, I address how the human body stores and remembers trauma, particularly in the context of Eating Disorders. Drawing from my own experiences and observations, I aim to create a visual representation of the ways in which trauma can become embedded in the body and the ways in which it can manifest and resurface over time. By bringing attention to the ways in which trauma can be embodied, we can gain a greater understanding of the complexities of recovery and the impact of trauma on the body and mind.

This series explores the complex and often tumultuous relationship between the mind and body in the context of Eating Disorders. Through a series of paintings that juxtapose bones and flesh, I emphasise how Eating Disorders can distort and disrupt the way we perceive and relate to our bodies, leading to a disconnection between the mind and the physical self. By depicting bones and flesh in close proximity, I highlight this disconnection and the often, difficult process of re-establishing a healthy relationship between the mind and body.

In this series of still-life paintings, I explore the dark and often hidden realities of Eating Disorders. These paintings depict scenes of struggle and pain within the mundanity of daily life, drawing attention to the invisible struggles faced by those with Eating Disorders. By depicting these struggles within the context of everyday life, my works humanises the Eating Disorder issue and bring attention to the subtle and often overlooked ways in which Eating Disorders manifest and impact those affected by them.

‘The Feelings That Linger’ explores the complex and often difficult feelings that continue to be present after Eating Disorder treatment. While treatment can be a crucial step towards recovery, it is not always a straightforward or easy process. Through my art, I aim to give voice to the ongoing struggles and challenges that many people face as they try to recover from an Eating Disorder. My work speaks to the frustration, fear, and vulnerability that can linger long after treatment has ended. I believe that it is important to acknowledge and address these difficult feelings in order to heal and move forward. By sharing my own experiences and creating a space for others to do the same, I am to create a sense of connection and understanding for those who may feel isolated in their struggles.
art in actionIn my work about Eating Disorders, I strive to create an intimate and personal connection with the viewer. To achieve this, I use small-scale paintings alongside personal everyday items such as my childhood teddy bear, my scale and my eating utensils that invite the viewer to engage with the work on a deeper, more intimate level.

Each artwork tells a unique story, drawing from my own experiences with Eating Disorders as well as the experiences of others. By sharing these deeply personal stories, I intend to create a sense of empathy and understanding in the viewer. Some examples of how I displayed these creative outcomes are from the solo shows in Arthouse Jersey (British Channel Islands, 2022) and A Glimpse Behind The Blood (Taipei, 2022). Through my work, I aim to raise awareness about these often misunderstood and stigmatised conditions, and to provide a ‘voice for the untold’ on behalf of those who may be struggling with an Eating Disorder.

Please note: This DCA research section of the website is designed for this creative portfolio, ‘The Starving Artist’, and the remaining ‘Ally Zlatar’ websites are designed to be public-facing initiative. The subsequent sections are dedicated to provide the content for the online creative portfolio to accompany the exegesis.

project overview

This creative portfolio entitled ‘The Starving Artist’ consists of a series of exhibitions, accompanying catalogue publication ‘One Body My Body No Body’ as part of the Doctor of Creative Arts program, with a 70% weighting. As a contemporary artist and curator, I explore my own personal experiences with Eating Disorders within my practice. Those inflicted by Eating Disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and Orthorexia experience a profoundly deep experience with mental illness (Bordo, 2001). In turn, I foreground the various psychological states of Eating Disorders as a mental health matter within my work, as a means of counteracting the often stereotypical imagery based on the physical symptoms of Eating Disorders that is perpetuated by a ‘Culture of Thinness’ (Tillmann, 2009).

Beyond this, my visual art project is a response to the medical field that takes on a clinical. ‘objective’ and ‘outsider’ approach to the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of Eating Disorders, that potentially can often negate the individual-specific knowledges and experiences that could inform Eating Disorder treatment.

My practice-led research therefore seeks to contribute to the understanding of Eating Disorders as a means of an autoethnographic and artist-insider approach to edify what an individual lived-experience’ endures mentally as well as physically. By using the self-experience as data (i.e. stories and texts) within my work, I explore and contextualise various personal accounts to gain an understanding of the Eating Disorder experience. This creative portfolio foregrounds the outcomes through the sections of Artist Journal  and  Process. The artist journal documents the creative process and the artwork creation gives you a glimpse into how I create the works.

Other sections in the creative portfolio exemplify the impact of the Creative Outcomes through the  Exhibitions and Engagement Impact these communicate the various artworks, workshops, events and exhibitions and their diverse audiences.  There is also the public-oriented website The Starving Artist that serves as the broader public initiative

about the artist-researcher

I examine notions of the individual experience by focusing on Eating Disorders as a mental illness, through foregrounding and expressing vulnerability, and personal authenticity of lived-in Eating Disorder experiences. My works are emotionally and psychologically charged with personal narratives and life experiences that utilise autoethnographic experiences and art as a catalyst for activism and change-making within society.

For example, my project extends beyond a standard research study by also taking form as an global artist initiative that utilises creative voices to create advocacy and systemic reform by founding The Starving Artist Scholarship Fund which helps people access inpatient treatment for Eating Disorders. Furthermore, my "This Body of Mine" campaign explores migrant experiences through creative voices and has helped support individuals and artists from refugee-seeking backgrounds globally. In turn, I have received the highest accolade a young person can achieve for their humanitarian work; winner of ‘The Princess Diana Legacy Award’, 2021, ‘King Hamad Award for Youth Empowerment’,2022, ‘Y20 Award Finalist for Diversity and Inclusion’ (Youth 20 by G20 Summit) and special recognition from ‘The British Citizen Award’, 2022.

engagement impact
As a researcher, I was committed to sharing the impact of my autoethnographic practice-led research on self-experiences of Eating Disorders with various audiences. Through my speaking engagements, accolades, workshops, fellowships, and residencies, I was able to showcase the significance of my doctoral research for society at large.

At academic conferences, I presented my findings and engaged with other researchers and scholars to contribute to the advancement of Eating Disorder research. I shared my personal experiences and insights with healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and therapists, to help them understand the complexities of eating disorders and the importance of a compassionate and holistic approach to treatment. In addition, I applied for fellowships and residencies to further my research and share my knowledge with a wider community. I collaborated with community organisations, schools, and other institutions to raise awareness about Eating Disorders, promote mental health and wellbeing, and encourage individuals to seek help and support when needed.

Through these engagements, I was able to make a positive impact on society by contributing to the development of strategies and approaches for prevention, treatment, and recovery. I am proud to have been at the forefront of creating change towards increased public awareness, reduced stigma, and improved access to resources and support for individuals with eating disorders and their families.

From there she has been using art to create systemic change through intersectionality of art and different sectors, art’s ability to communicate difficult subjects, and so much more.

exhibitions
Throughout ‘The Starving Artist’ doctoral research, I have produced over 10 exhibition outcomes that serve as an important testimony to the global interest and recognition of the broader need of enhancing public awareness of Eating Disorders.
The exhibitions explore my difficulties with my Eating Disordered body through diverse social and cultural contexts.

A Glimpse Behind The Blood |The Red House Period Museum, Taipei Taiwan | 2022This exhibition explores my difficulties with my Eating Disordered body that is emphasised through my menstrual experience. In sharing my intimate menstrual issues, I reveal the complex and diverse impacts of Eating Disorders. Some of the main themes of this show is vulnerability within menstration journies, learning to adapt with amenorrhea; a condition where the body enters survival mode because it is under-fuelled, causing menstruation to stop (Mc Gregor, 2022). Audiences are able to learn from my experience and see how eating disorders were a form of resistance against the menstrating female body.

Food: Recipe or Remedy | Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Apr 2022- Nov 2023
This exhibition encourages us to consider both the social and the medical ideas around food and aims to show how our shifting notions of, and relationship with, our
diet have been central to medicine for hundreds of years. My work brought a contemporary reflection to our understanding of Eating Disorders and their relationship with food. I was also honoured to give a talk at the college to share more about the work and research.

‘The Body Room’ Gallery Asna, Clonakilty Arts | Cork, Ireland, Mar 2022My works were selected for a solo show titled “The Body Room” at Gallery Asna in Cork, Ireland. My art deals with themes surrounding heightened periods of emotions experienced during Eating Disorders, mental illness and social engagement and the effects it has both on the mind and body. Using the body as a focal point in this work, I created a visual language that externalises the internal, personal experiences. Where my work diverges from traditional body-focused experiences of mental illness, is my exploration into the body as a path to understanding the mind of the lived-in experience.Poster From Gallery Asna

‘One Body, My Body, No Body’ exhibition had a debut at The Herald Building in Glasgow City Center. The exhibition featured a variety of pieces of mine, that documented the autoethnographic journey of my Eating Disorder experience. I give the audience a glimpse into the reality of living with an Eating Disorder. I strive to capture the personal struggles and experiences combating Anorexia. Each painting dives into the profound emotions and immense difficulty living with an Eating Disorder.
